Wonderful walks in Mid-Devon
It’s #NationalWalkingMonth and the charity, Living Streets, who promote everyday walking is encouraging people to walk for 20 minutes every day throughout May to maintain their physical and mental health and well-being during lockdown. We have enjoyed exploring some new local footpaths during this time and #NationalWalkingMonth is also the perfect time to share some of our favourite walks that our glampers can experience when staying with us.
On our doorstep…
The Exe Valley Way runs through our land and provides a pretty woodland walk all the way to Tiverton. Some of our glampers opt to get the bus back to Bickleigh if you’d prefer not to do the 8-mile round trip.
We also enjoying walking through the winding countryside lanes to the Butterleigh Inn. It’s quite steep in places so the Sunday carvery waiting at the other end is a welcome sight, and you can also indulge in a dessert because you know you’ll burn off the calories on the return journey!
A short car journey…
20-minutes away is the Grand Western Canal which you can walk or cycle along in various different spots. Our favourite is the Swan’s neck circular path, where you can have a relaxing stroll and see lots of lovely nature and wildlife on the way. A pit stop at The Hickory Inn smokehouse pub or the Halberton Court Farm shop café is a must.
Raddon Top, with it’s iconic Raddon pine tree, is a hidden gem and the perfect place to see spectacular views across both Exmoor and Dartmoor. Starting in the pretty village of Thorverton you navigate across various fields, meeting sheep and a few hills along the way, but the view you get at the top is amazing. A great place to have a picnic and take in the breathtaking views. If you’re able to find it there is a geocache box hidden in the nearby woodland where you can record a message.
There are also the National Trust properties of Killerton and Knighthayes which have lovely countryside walks and not forgetting the vast National Parks of Dartmoor and Exmoor to explore. Visit Mid-Devon has lots of other walking and cycling routes, so the world literally is your oyster when it comes to walks in Devon!
